Jury hands landlord $855,000 penalty

Abuse - A woman forced to perform a sex act to settle her rent wins civil damages

A Washington County jury has decided that a Beaverton woman should be paid $855,000 by her former landlord after he forced her to perform a sex act with him in exchange for back rent.

The verdict against Moji Momeni and his company, CJR Inc., which owns 15 apartment buildings, mainly in Beaverton, was handed down Friday by a Washington County Circuit Court jury. The defendant's name is being withheld by The Oregonian because of the nature of the case.

The victim's attorney in the civil trial, Randall Vogt of Portland, said he believed the jury awarded substantially less than the $10 million sought because it was not allowed to hear evidence of similar allegations made by other tenants. Vogt said five other women said they'd been approached by Momeni in a similar fashion.

"When I didn't get what i felt like was justice as a victim of sexual assault, I decided to empower myself by hiring Randy Vogt to represent me. From the moment we began our journey through the judicial system they were sensitive to my fears and available to any questions I had. When it came to trial, Randy blew me away with his knowledge and expertise. He won the case for $855 thousand dollars and was worth more than he earned on my case. He cares about his clients and really listens to what they want to accomplish in the process of a civil suit. He and his office team were my angels, truly helping me to begin to put this behind me and live again. I can't thank them enough for my new life and opportunity to heal again.."

I am a 36-year-old mother of a beautiful seven-year-old son. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. For years, I was subjected to horrific acts of sexual abuse perpetrated by my father.
By the time, I reached my adult years I was burdened with feelings of shame, guilt, depression, and anxiety. I came to a sudden realization of just how much the abuse has affected my life. I learned that the symptoms I am experiencing today are a direct result of the victimization as a child.

I currently live in California however, due to the crimes having been committed in Oregon; I decided to contact the law firm of Randall Vogt in Portland Oregon. The decision to pursue legal action and having to face my abuser again was both intimidating and frightening but with Randall Vogt by my side, I was not intimidated nor was I frightened. I felt this overwhelming sense of empowerment and validation.
Randall walked me through the process and together we took legal action. The entire process took approximately eight months. During those eight months, Randall kept me updated with any new information but what I appreciated most was the support he offered.
At the beginning of the eighth month, my case settled at mediation. Randall Vogt helped me regain a sense of control that I had lost as a child.

Randall is a compassionate attorney who really understands the devastating consequences sexual abuse can have on a person's life. Randall Vogt will listen with empathy and fight for you in court.
I know that every survivor out there wants to be heard and validated and have someone speak up for them. I also know how hard it is for survivors to trust anyone...but you can put all your trust in Randall Vogt.
Randall helped me get my life back. My decision to take my perpetrator to court has given me a profound sense of closure.
At last, I feel as though the little girl inside me has been given justice and a sense of peace.

Let Randall Vogt help you regain that sense of control that you were robbed of as a child.

Thank You

I wanted to thank you two for everything you have done for me and my family throughout this ordeal. Without the support, dedication and compassion that you each showed I truly believe the outcome may have been different.

I'm still numb that the actual legal stuff is all over, however it has allowed me to put this behind me and work on a deeper sense of healing that I've needed and wanted for so long. I really appreciate the way you guys connected with my parents and made this experience for them one of comfort, honesty and empathy. This has helped them to put some of these missing pieces of the puzzle and shed some light into my personal struggles and demons that I have had to live with.

Unfortunately I don't think this will be the last of the cases against [offender] and the church. I just hope that more people have the strength and the courage to come forward and expose these disgusting acts of violence against children. Maybe some day [offender] will get what he deserves and feel some of the pain and suffering he has caused so many people over the years.
